Our 2023 Beneficiaries
We are raising vital funds for youth-led causes, in memory of an extraordinary person gone too soon. This year, The Zohar Dean Trust is supporting four charities all close to Zohar's heart. Read more about each of these amazing charities below, and how every donation can make a difference.
In2Science
In2scienceUK empowers young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their potential through life-changing opportunities that give them insights into STEM careers and research, boosting their skills and confidence.
Each year, In2Science gives nearly 500 students the opportunity to take part in STEM placement opportunities, working alongside researchers and industry professionals to get hands-on experience over the summer.
Zohar was a talented Physicist, gaining partial scholarships for his education in both his first and second year, as well as winning an award from the Leeds Physics Department. Zohar believed in the fairness of education, and we believe in2scienceUK would be a cause close to his heart.
LJY-Netzer
LJY-Netzer is the ideological Youth Movement of Liberal Judaism, a youth-led charity that runs national and international programmes for young people between the ages of 8-25. Events mix fun, games, community, social action and informal education. Run by its members, for its members. LJY empowers young people to find their connection with Jewish values in a safe and inclusive environment.
Zohar joined LJY-Netzer aged 13 and consistently gave up his summers to volunteer at their events for young people. He was a phenomenal leader who the kids were instantly drawn to and trusted. He truly inspired the next generation of Liberal Jews and was adored by all.
Zohar met Martha and some of his best friends on LJY, including the other two Founding Trustees, Rosa and Adam. The importance of LJY in Zohar’s life should not be understated, he loved that it was a community in which everyone could be their true selves, non-judged, immersed in silliness and discussing important issues.
He was insistent that his three siblings, Sapphire, Eden and Nadir should continue to spend their summers on camp. Since Zohar’s passing, LJY has been profound in creating a community for his family and friends grieving.
A donation to LJY-Netzer will ensure that Zohar’s legacy is forever felt on camp. A gift from him directly to the children, who miss his presence, funny sessions and caring nature all too much.
Our Second Home
Our Second Home is the UK's youth movement building the skills and confidence of refugees and migrants to flourish into adulthood. Through transformative activities, members are enabled to take control of their lives and create meaningful change for themselves and their wider community. There are thousands of young refugees and migrants arriving in this country every year. They are often isolated and lonely, living in foster care or supported accommodation without the necessary infrastructure to develop. Since 2018, 236 young people from 31 countries have joined Our Second Home from trips, leadership training and educational classes.
Zohar was known amongst his peers as someone who helped others become more confident and be their best selves. Being of Jewish descent, Zohar's maternal grandparents were made refugees by the Holocaust, eventually settling in Israel. The topic of refugees was always close to Zohar's heart. Martha and Zohar had discussed Our Second Home and he thought it was a great idea. It is a charity which gives young people who have been through unimaginable struggles a space to grow and embrace themselves.
Youth First
Youth First is a Lewisham-based charity supporting young people in the borough through youth clubs and street-based intervention from the ages 8-19 (up to 25 with additional needs). One in 10 of the young people that Youth First works with are classed as vulnerable by Lewisham council.
Youth First is therefore a charity dedicated to putting the Lewisham youth first. Lewisham is one of London's most disadvantaged boroughs, and Youth Clubs and mentors are essential to the positive development of young people in the area.
Youth first helped support the Deptford Youth Club which both Zohar and his sister Sapphire attended whilst growing up. Zohar's youngest siblings, Eden and Nadir still attend Youth First.
